Just saw your comment on Neil Hilborn’s page and had to send my thanks over! Not enough people recognize this about spoken word, or performance poetry as you called it. I write a lot of poetry myself and so its hard to know where one fits in when it seems the only way to have your voice heard is to bear yourself naked to the world. Not that that isn’t “courageous” in some sense, but, to me, it defeats the purpose of poetry, at least in the long run. A true poet isn’t just looking to vent, he’s looking to tell the story of his soul, building meaning and feeling both as it grows and cries, not just the one.
