except us

We’re all hungry, unless we’re asleep—
why wake up, when the dream is sweet;
the big one ate the small one,
swallowed him whole,
rewarded for the chase—
but not now, not today;
she eats him bit by bit,
and he came to her slowly,
as if his world sunk under the oceans,
and no one runs, no one swims, none sing

except us we eat it all
